Prologue:
Pandora was a beautiful place. Or so hope the two surviving Sully siblings. The trio of trouble, they had been called. The two males, identical, were almost exact opposites. Tommy was the brain, the scientist, where Jake was the brawn, the military man. But the girl, Kady, was both. She was their heart. The 22 year old triplets had been inseparable. At least, until Tommy was killed by a mugger. Though, Kady had her suspicions that it was arranged.
Two men from the company Tom worked for, had approached Jake and Kady before Tom’s cremation, Tom had arranged Kady’s transfer from the program on Earth, to the Avatar program on Pandora. But they needed Jake because of Tom’s avatar. Otherwise, she’d be without her brother for nigh close to a decade. And Kady didn’t like being separated from her brothers. Now they were just twins, their third killed in a mugging that stunk to high heaven of suspicion, at least to Kady. And now? Now on the transport from the ship above Pandora, that was taking them to Hell’s Gate. Hell’s Gate was one of the bases on Pandora. All quite apt to their names, except for the small outpost at the Hallelujah mountains.
Kady sat next to her brother, chattering with Norm. Jake had been quiet most of the ride, but he was still active in the conversation. Kady was thought to be an extreme oddity. The atmosphere of Pandora had absolutely NO effect on her. Kady was quite beautiful, people thought her to be a brainless shit, like most girls her age and with her looks. But when she broke down the components needed to make the tiniest, and most important, part of a gun, they shut the hell up. Kady had quite the temper and was thought to, by her family, be quite fearless.
But she was just like any other girl, in some respects, she had her fears just like anybody else. She hated seeing Jake in that chair, remembering when they used to just run. But he couldn’t do that anymore. She couldn’t wait until they were in their avatars. She wanted to run with her brother again. Just do the small things, like playing. Just running and climbing and wrestling. She was shit at basketball, which Norm said was rumored to be favored at the bases.
Kady had tuned out the crew chief. The man had been told that Kady was immune to the atmosphere, but he didn’t seem to believe it.
“Remember people,” He yelled over the roar of the engines, “you lose your mask; you’re unconscious in 20 seconds,” No shit, Kady thought to herself, “and you’re dead in four minutes,” Kady rolled her eyes under closed eyelids, “let’s nobody be dead today, it looks bad on my report.”
Jake noticed the nasty look the crew chief gave Kady and just glared back at him. Even IF Kady was older than him, he still protected her like she was the baby. Since Tom died, it became his job to take care of Kady. When the transport landed, everyone lined up to get off the boat. Kady held on to Jake’s shoulders, standing on the little pedals on the back of the wheelchair, that Tom had put there just for her. Kady looked over her shoulder at Norm, who excused himself and cut up the line to them. The two surviving Sully sibling put themselves in the chatty scientist’s hands.
The crew chief gave them a look, but the trio ignored it. Jake and Kady were just too damn tired to deal with his attitude. Kady leaned forward on her brother, taking an I-Pod out of her pocket, handing it to Norm. Who held it as she put one set of earbuds in her ears, then he handed it back so she could put the other set in Jake’s, tucking the I-Pod into a pocket on the wheelchair after starting the music. Kady and Jake relaxed as the first song of Kady’s ‘Love Sick’ play list started.
“Go directly into the base,” The crew chief just sighed and shook his head at Jake and Kady, who had their eyes closed, “Do not stop, go straight inside.”
Norm rolled his eyes, but waited as the line went on, moving when it was their turn.
“Look at all the new meat,” Norm heard one man speak.
Norm made sure that he was standing close enough to the wheelchair to brace Kady and went on, trying to ignore them.
“Check it out,” The other spoke, having spotted Norm, Kady and Jake, “meals on wheels.”
Norm was suddenly glad that Kady had turned the I-Pod on when she did. Or else, she would have been over there ripping the guy a new one. Kady had quite the temper, so Norm was ever so glad. Jake felt relaxed by the touch of his sister. Yeah, Jake thought to himself, and THAT didn’t sound bad. Jake didn’t know what he would have done if he’d lost BOTH of his siblings. He probably would have just died. He would have been too far gone, lost, without purpose.
“That is just wrong,” The first man just shook his head.
The two men, Wainfleet and Fike, give the trio a few nasty looks. Norm made sure that he had Kady pinned to the chair, but it was Jake that spoke.
“What are you two limp dicks staring at?” Jake glared.
